Today, the hottest and longest day of the year, bean, 10, gets all active. We wrote another chapter of his minecraft story which we haven't worked on in months; he finished whittling his tent peg and began work on a spoon; and he spent five hours putting together a solar powered robot dog.
Pumpkin, 8, found his usual spot on the sofa and settled down to watch and play on his tablet, he also played roblox and the amazing frog on the computer, he joined bean putting together the dogbot for a while, played in the garden and the paddling pool for a bit too. His favourite part of the day was eating the chocolate brownies that daddy brought home from work after his birthday so we must get the recipe.
Plum, 5, played in the garden and the paddling pool with pippin, 2. Mostly she spent the day lying on her top bunk in the breeze of an open window, watching on youtube. She did ask if we could go to the prk but was happy with the suggestion of going after gymnastics tomorrow and meeting friends.
Pippin watched frozen twice and madagascar 2 twice today as well as playing in the paddling pool and playing with my wool, pretending it was a dog on a lead.

Pagham Holiday
Pagham is on the South coast, West Sussex, right next to Bognor Regus. It is approximately 1 hour from our house. A quick get away. Trip to the coast. And a chance to explore the other end of the county! We stayed in a caravan. Daddy and Pippin, 2, shared a room, mummy and Plum, 5, shared a room and Bean, 9, and Pumpkin, 8 shared a room. Bean turned 10 whilst we were away.
Monday was travel day. We took our time to finish packing and get last minute things done. Mummy went food shopping and Bean came too. We organised the animals and ended up having our picnic lunch at home before we left. The children all packed their own back packs and off we set. We went and enjoyed the arcade games and had slush puppies and ice cream smoothies in the evening. Bean and Pumpkin found a fishing boat game that they liked and gave them lots of tickets. They decided to save their tickets until the end of the week before cashing them in.
Tuesday we all went to the Weald and Downland Museum. There was lots to see and do. Pumpkin enjoyed making a roof segment with roof tiles, Plum made an arch bridge that she could then sit on and Bean put together the timber frames of a model house about 6ft high. We had two staff members helping us out with all these things and explaining how they worked and where we could see them on the buildings around the museum. The chilsren all liked the gypsy caravans and we watched the carpenter and the blacksmith at work. We found a mechanism that needed a horse to pull it and Pumpkin recognised it from Pirates of the Carribean. Bean enjoyed the toilet that led straight below into the outside and we all enjoyed ice cream.
We went for a swim back at the holiday site, which turned out to be a bit crowded. Mummy went and found the nature reserve and coastal walk after dinner and then we all went to the arcade in the evening.
Wednesday was Bean's birthday. I will write about his special day here.
Thursday we took a more restful day and stayed on site. We swam in the morning again and Bean and plum chose to wear googles today. Bean was determined to hold his breathe and used the sinking rings again. We spent a long time counting how many seconds he could put his face in the water for. His record was 9 seconds but he only felt comfortable in the shallow end for this length of time, any further out and it was 3 or 4 seconds. Both the boys went on the slide again, Pumpkin repeatedly. Pumpkin also spent a lot of time moving around the perimeter of the pool.
Daddy took Bean and Plum and Pippin to the play area whilst Pumpkin and mummy went and prepared lunch. Bean caught us up and met us just as we reached the caravan.
The boys had a go at riding the easyscooters in the afternoon. These were motorised scooters. They were very cautious but had fun zooming around the basketball court on them and racing through the obstacle course. We found the coastal walk back to the caravan which was longer than we had anticipated and involved avoiding taking the buggy across stones. We stopped and played skimming stones on the lagoon andwatched the investation of moth caterpillars crawling everywhere. Bean became upset with our choice of route but we got back eventually and Plum had some lovely encouragment for him along the way.
We went to the arcade again in the evening where the boys cashed in their tickets. Bean got a rubix cube and Pumpkin exchanged his for a large pencil sweet for himself and a sweet each for Plum and Pippin. Plum was pleased to see that the show involved the singing of Frozen songs on the stage. We got ice cream for the children and stayed to watch the singing for the next show too. Pippin, Pumpkin and Bean all opted to leave first as they were tired and Plum and mummy followed on a little later.
Friday we packed up and checked out followed by a final swim, where Bean swam a width and almost a length of the pool and spent more time holding his breathe under water whilst wearing googles. Pippin spent large amounts of time climbing out and jumping in, Plum being pulled around the pool by daddy and Pumpkin on the slide and circuiting the perimeter again. Bean and Pumpkin made a pool dare game together. We had a picnic lunch in the play area before heading home.
In between all the activity, there was playing chess and draughts and reading Harry Potter and 'Brown bear, Brown Bear', watching cbeebies and Poptv, discussing advertising and advertisments, twirling ribbons, colouring, playing hide and seek and 'scaredy cat.'

Not for saele
Friday we took a trip into town, the library twice, the playpark twice and the toyshop. Bean, 9, ordered Pokemon books from the library and a puzzle story book. We found a book called All aboard the Poo Bus which Pumpkin, 8, chose to bring home, Plum, 5, found a Little Princess book and Pippin, 2, found a Bing book.
The toyshop resulted in new shopkins, grosseries and a pop gun.
And our wander around town resulted in Pumpkin seeing our house for sale in an estate agent window. There was quite the upset to follow, for days, it might continue for days to come also.
Saturday we had no plans. Plum and Bean decided that the paddling pool should come out. We filled it with water and put the slide in. Bean and one go and declared it cold. Pippin and Plum spent more time outside the pool playing with a few toys in it. Pumpkin is immersing himself in BallisticSquid videos on YouTube. There was also more talk from the boys, specifically Bean, about not moving.
Sunday was Mother's Day. Bean had made me some things in mincraft, sculptures of hearts and words that said Best Mum. Plum took daddy to the shop specifically to buy me a present (nail varnish) which we then used to paint each others nails in the garden. We washed the toys in the paddling pool and daddy made us a picnic snack of apples and grapes.
We went to church in the morning, daddy stayed home with Pumpkin. We played cricket in the garden with the other children and Bean wanted to know if we would still come to this church when we move.
We read Bean's puzzle book at lunch time and he completes all the puzzles. And in the evening he dictates a minecraft story to me. We write chapter 1 and part of chapter 2. He has also written two signs for our house. One says 'no moov home' and the second is in our front window and says 'not for saele'.

Jolly Snow
Monday 6th August
I can't believe I only have one photo from today!
We had an early start this morning, both boys up and Plum before 6.30 (Plum woke at 6.00 but fed in bed before we got up.) Bean asked for a show box to make a puppet theatre with and some sticks to put puppets on. Before 8.30am we had two reasonable theatres and a selection of puppets. Both boys want to decorate them some more but have enjoyed using them already.
We met friends at a play park this morning and Bean was struggling to hold it together. So much so that he said he didn't want to go to gymnastics because he was too tired (said whilst displaying being too tired!) I couldn't quite believe it as he loves gymnastics so much but even after I explained that it was at a certain time and if we didn't go now then there would be no gymnastics he choose not to go. I was expecting some fall out later when he realised he had missed it but it didn't happen.
Instead we returned home after eating our lunch at the park and had some more food. Later we took the dog out for a walk.
Pumpkin has taken to doing bubble experiments in the bathroom (not convenient!) It involves a lot of toiletries being poured into the sink and the overflow being in use. It has taken me the whole weekend to realise that I need to provide a place and supplies for him to do this some where more acceptable. He got the inspiration from a story book we read on Friday - Jolly Snow

Introducing Bean
Bean is currently 4 3/4 and loves building, stories and asking questions.
In the course of one day he can build: a train track on the living room floor; a city in our conservatory (including road network, car garage, airport and a block of flats;) a fire engine that becomes a flat that becomes the rainforest in his bedroom; a dolls house made of duplo; a tall tower with extra large bricks; a treasure chest and probably a whole host of other things that work their way into the process before reaching the final product. I'm already wondering where this love of building things will lead him and whether it will be a life long passion or, like so many other things, may come to pass. He will use any material available to build whatever comes to mind, my favourite has to be using the grated cheese at mealtime to create a bonfire!
Stories have been a number one favourite since birth, I think. There are days when we can sit and read together and do little else. A trip to the library is a real highlight and, when asked, 'what would you like to do today?' will often request a library visit. We are very keen that he learns to read in the traditional sense in his own time and I allow him to read anything that he chooses from picture books, to chapter books, information books, the daily newspaper, and other magazines we subscribe to. We deliberately choose not to limit reading to 'age appropriate' material initially to give a more rounded view of what reading was for but more recently have been aware of how much he responds to and inquires about things that we previously wouldn't have introduced him to. In some ways this is probably due to a decade and a half of me teaching Reception age children the same old topics: 'All about me' and 'Mini-beasts' etc. that I have missed the fact that children want to know so much more.
...I also want my children to have their own love of reading and let this be the springboard for them to learn to read, dare I say especially because they are boys. For a more articulate rational: see Michael Rosen blog
It is reckoned that the *average* 4 year old asks 500 questions a day! I should try and count them! Mostly Bean is currently asking questions about astronomy, skeletal structure, trains, nature and the great outdoors, babies, death, time and distance. I love nurturing their natural curiosity and am very honest when I don't know the answer...as I often don't but we collectively go to lengths to find the answers so much so that he has started asking, 'mummy, who would know about...?' Am I ready for him to be so autonomous at the age of 4?
